[ale] network disconnect

Try booting RH9 with acpi=off and see if that helps.  The ACPI stuff can 
affect hardware if the BIOS DSDT is accepted by the kernel but broken 
somewhere.  Actually made the difference on being able to run X on one 
machine when loading SuSE 8.2.
