Some APs ship with the internal AMP not at the highest setting.  Look into that.  And if you really want to shape your coverage area you do it with antennas.  External amps are available too but relatively pricey.  250 feet isn't very far if it's outdoors (read line-of-sight).  Indoors that might take a little bit of horsepower.

All this talk about hotspots has me wondering what it would take to extend
the reach of my AP.  Just suppose that I wanted to extend the perimeter
250ft in one direction, what would be involved?
