Until about twenty years ago, "gender" was only used to describe grammatical 
entities like pronouns. "Sex" was used to to talk about male/female 
differences. William Safire said he thought the jump occurred when people 
began to talk about "the gender gap" in pay. He thought it probably would 
have been awkward for people to talk about "the sex gap".
