Yeah, but on all the pirate bbs's of the time (actually, quite a large
percentage of all of 'em, if you knew the right people) you could get
free copies of the latest and greatest windoze and windoze apps.

Never saw an OS2 warez bbs, nor an amiga warez bbs, and next-to-none in
the Mac side, either (I think the cost of the hardware itself played a
role in this latter factlet).

People use what they know, and are more likely to know it if they can
try it free, and it's install is as mindless as the usual dos/windoze
crap.

Micro$oft played it smart in only prosecuting people who were actually
making counterfiet copies of it's products for retail sale, seriously. 
And when they *did* get involved in prosecuting some bbs geek, it's
penalties were along the lines of one case where the guy had to agree to
use ONLY Micro$oft products for the rest of his life (ARRRRRGH!  A LIFE
SENTENCE!).  Far cry from what Novell's practices were, and we can see
what Novell's market-shares are now.

And most people, being basically honest, generally fork over the money
eventually for the stuff they use.
