*Sometimes* you can get away with forcing it, then creating symlinks
with the names of the older libraries.  Probably not recommended for a
production system.

The alternative is to build the SRPM against the current libraries.  Or
just build from a tarball and install it in /usr/local.

My Mandrake 8 desktop got like that, and I finally bit the bullet and
did a fresh install of RH8.  It's soooo much nicer.
