Turns out the problem was not setting my ulimit to unlimited.  Soon as I
did that, Quake 3 ran like a charm.  :-)  

Oh, I also had to doublecheck that my symlinks from libGL.so pointed to
the nvidia drivers version of libGL.so.

Then I discovered that Quake 3 was very dark; much darker than normal.
So, I'm currently fiddling with /r_fullbright and /r_gamma 2.5 in my
Quake 3 console.  I guess one could also you xgamma in XFree, but
everything else is bright enough, I think.  I'll keep fiddling though.
