[ale] Suse or Red Hat? (yes, yes, i know here we go again...)

SuSE is rpm based. I haven't worked with apt4rpm but wish to figure out
how to get that type functionality working. It is not easy to upgrade
software unless someone has already worked thru building the packages
for SuSE. Most upgrades between versions of SuSE don't work out
perfectly either with a reinstall as the best method. If you want to
stay with the latest software then a Debian based distro is probably
better for you. Unencrypted DVDs and all mp3s work just fine out of the
box. Mplayer comes preinstalled, but without the encryption algorithms
installed like most distros.

I like the nice easy tools in Yast2 and the dependency checks in the
software installation. However, the Debian based apt-get sure sound
nice when you want an upgrade of a package to actually integrate into
your distro installation. Right now I can install the latest Openoffice
but the original is what is integrated into KDE. The new software is
put into a directory I specify and isn't replacing what the distro
installed. You would have to hack KDE to get the menus directed correctly.

This is why I am really interested in the Gentoo demo tonight at ALE-NW.
