Greetings from the USENIX Annual Technical Conference. Last night was
the SAGE BoF at which 'reduced' SAGE dues were announced. Today was
the keynote by Neal Stephenson, who explored how creativity (both
writing fiction and creating programs) works. It appears that the
conference is going swimmingly.

####### Microsoft: 800 lb. Gorilla Moves Into the AntiVirus Business

Marcia Savage reports for CRN Magazine on Microsoft's plan to acquire
RAV AntiVirus maker GeCAD Software Srl. While plans for distributing
the anti-virus engine itself are still tentative pending completion
of the acquisition, "The delivery of the updates or signatures will
be fee based," according to Amy Carroll, group product manager at
Microsoft's Security business unit.

The potential for integration with other Microsoft products may spell
big trouble for others in the anti-virus market. Some in the security
community, like Stenstrom Scientific CEO Gregory Stenstrom, are
already predicting the end for other anti-virus companies, advising
"If I were them, I'd get into another business."

According to InfoWorld
(http://www.infoworld.com/article/03/06/11/HNrav_1.html), the
acquisition may even have repercussions in the Linux market: RAV
AntiVirus is a popular solution on Linux-based e-mail gateways.
Microsoft has already announced plans to discontinue the product line.
