It was DivX (not to be confused with the divx video codec, which came
after).  And it was quite a spectacular failure.

This new version *could* be successful, if they market it correctly.  If
it costs the same as a video rental, or maybe just a wee bit more, and
works in a standard DVD player, then I could see it's value.  I would be
willing to pay a little more to "rent" a DVD that I didn't have to worry
about returning.  Hell, I would probably recoup the extra price by not
having to pay any late fees.

This could work if they are able to make people think they are
*renting*, not *buying*.  DivX was never able to do that.
