I have an IBM EPro box at work with an i810 sound card, and I have to
say the ALSA drivers sound much better than the OSS driver.  With the
OSS driver, I would get lots of distortion when playing mp3s, but they
sound fine with ALSA.  I don't know about multiple apps using the device
at once, though, as I don't use gnome or kde.
