Hey Emil!  Nice to get to post a reply to your question! ;-)

Don't worry about using the old cards since if they are recognized you 
will still get great throughput on the campus network.  The ftp server 
at the other end will be the limiting factor.  If you wish to try to 
make the card you have work, then post the exact card name, the dmesg 
output off your machine (if catchable) pertaining to the ethernet 
initial setup.  For example, if you have a Realtek 8139 chip onboard the 
motherboard and the 8139too driver module is what is loaded, then we'd 
need to know that.  Your problem may be the card needs a module 
parameter passed to work properly.  Personally, I'd just try the older 
10Mbit cards first, since that is easy to do.

Which is killing me.  I hate missing the meeting. :-(   But, you could 
take notes for me...

If the notes are good, then I'd trade food for notes.  How about it? ;-)
