Try the mem=nopentium on the LILO options.
Upgrade the Nvidia drivers.
Turn off as many services started at boot as you can.
Keep notes of the stuff you try and the order it's done in.

Keep askin' them questions! :-)
Coming to either ALE meeting?  This week or next week?  You could bring 
the box if you want to the ALE-NW and we could take a look see.
