Converting "Dozies" (was Re: [ale] OT: winxp upgrade...)

SuSE 8.0 and 8.1 both have /etc/sysconfig/ as a repository for
configuration scripts now. The old /etc/rc.config file is pretty much
stripped away. The SuSE distro is moving toward the United Linux 1.0
and maybe one day will be that. I think SuSE is a great distro for
people, just like RedHat or Mandrake, who are just beginning or don't
want to configure a lot of stuff on their own. My thought is that 8.0
and 8.1 have really moved toward replacing Windows easily for newbies.
I am going to take alot of the advice on converting people to use Linux
with my father, who has a lot of Windows problems on several machines
right now. None of his equipment is cutting edge, but he has a perfect
setup for a SOHO network with a dialout server and a centralized print
server. Thanks for all the hints on selling Linux to a Windozer!

We have here in our research group an application called EndNotes. It
tracks, adds, and simplifies reference management in writing papers and
proposals. It is absolutely magic for someone who needs to re-order
references or build references while writing a report. Imports
references directly from PubMed online. Very powerful. Only works with
MS-Word. :-(

BibTex is an alternative, but from what I've read (limited understanding
of the program here) it seems it might not be very easy to use,
certainly not a simple interface since it uses Tex. It isn't something
that I would hand over to a MS-Word person. Are there any alternatives
that anyone knows of for this type program that is opensource or for
Linux? I am planning to send an email to the makers of EndNote to
suggest porting to Openoffice.org for future business.
