[ale] OT: winxp upgrade version from scratch?

Back in my sullied MS days, I know that there was no upgrade path
between the Win95 line and the WinNT line - I would expect they've since
softened that in the name of WinXP ubiquity but I'm sure they wouldn't
have collapsed the barriers completely.
