[ale] backup setup

i would like to setup one of my older machines with a cd burner in
order to have it do an automatic backup.  i want it to do a daily
mirror of the "My Documents" folder and at the end of the week (or
month or whenever) have it burn the contents to cd.  that way my wife
will only have to walk by and replace the cd.  additionally if the
script could tar.gz the directory with the week ending date that would
be wonderful.

anyone know if there is a program that can do this or if it is
possible to write a script for this?  it will run on a debian machine
that i am setting up to do a weekly check for updates.

also i cannot stress enough how this would need to be a "set it and
forget it" type of project.
