When  I did something like this in my college apartment, we had one
linux machine set up as a Samba PDC, NIS master, and NFS server. If you
logged into a linux machine on the network, the /home partition on the
server would NFS mount onto the local machine. If you logged into a
Windows machine, your home directory would then mount via samba as a
drive on the Windows box. I then set up a printer on the file server and
connected every machine to that printer. Worked great for the three of
us living there at the time.
