actually there are different types of vampire (vampyre?).  one type is very
bloated and discolored.  they lived under bridges (like trolls) or in caves
and fed on small children.  

another (Vietnamese, Korean?) only used their body as a holding vessel.
their head, throat, stomach, and part of their intestines left the body at
night in order to feed (think of pulling the head off a doll).  it floated
around until it found someone to feed on and digested its' meal on the way
back to the body.  i also seem to recall that vinegar (?) was used on the
body as a preservative.

anyway, vampire are not the same throughout different cultures.
