You could certainly record / transfer from the analog connections (as Mathew 
suggested). Of course, that would be most practical if you had a realtime DVD 
recorder. Encoding DVD in software is incredibly time consuming, but at least 
one gets a little boost in quality for the time and effort.

I don't know if there are hacks for more direct tranfers from the hard drive. 
I'm pretty certain the encoding Tivo uses is just a variant of MPEG. Whether 
that variant is DVD MPEG 2 compatible is another question. I suggest 
searching out some of the Linux-Tivo hack sites to find out what's possible.
