The solution was to remove lm_sensors and i2c. The i2c stuff is now built into 
the kernel. And according to the home page for lm_sensors, that program 
doesn't work with the 2.5 and 2.6 kernels.

I finally decided to ditch Alsa and go back to the OSS driver. It works now, 
but I still can't get sound from CD's. I'm working on that one.

My kernel still runs slower than the 2.4 kernel.
