You are not going to get 1/2 mile with a Belkin USB 
802.11B adapter.  You may be able to send signal to it but
it may not be able to scream loud enough for you 
to hear it.

It is like when peopl used to ask me if our (Computone) serial
boards could go 1000 feet.  I would say sure but can
your Wyse terminal speak back at 1000' feet.  If you can hear
me and I can not hear you then it is worthless to opertate.
Unless you like onw-way communications.
