[ale] I appear to have somehow hosed up my Gentoo install

Everyone,

     Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. I got Gentoo up and running,
got qmail installed (emerge -v net-mail/qmail), qmail-scanner installed (emerge
-v net-mail/qmail-scanner), and spamassassin installed (emerge -v
dev-perl/Mail-SpamAssassin). I set qmail to startup automagically, set clamav
(came with qmail) to startup automagically, and set SpamAssassin to startup
automagically. Then I rebooted. Now, when I reboot, it hangs, with the
following information on the screen:

* Starting metalog...
* Mounting network filesystems...
* Starting vcron...
* Starting local...

     I booted back up with my boot cd, and looked around (really the only places
that I know to look were /etc/fstab [in case I screwed something up in there
with etc-update], and /boot/grub/grub.conf [same thing]), but I didn't find
anything out of the ordinary. Any suggestions on where I could look next?
