[ale] RANT dial on demand

Tell you what:

Post your mother-in-laws email to us and we will pass on your positive
comments on the situation. ;-)

Actually, wvdial should work great if you don't have the function
enabled that just starts ppp. Since she is dialing in to you, you would
set the parameters on your server. Don't you have her doing CHAP or
PAP? Also, under SuSE 7.1 there was a dod.wvdial script in /etc/init.d
that would, if called, start wvdial in dial on demand mode. Once you
got the first connection with wvdial working, then you could enable the
dod.wvdial script and forget about it. Had a friend's firewall do that
for his business and they were never down. He loved it. I guess you
could dig that script out of some old SuSE distro such as 7.1.

Usually you are looking for wvdial to look for a "ogin:" prompt. If you
don't provide it then wvdial can, if enabled, just start PPP. That is
kind of like walking in a bar, pulling out the hogleg, and letting her
bang away. Not very elegant!!!

Once you get passed the login and password prompts then the server
should start PPP. The client should just look for a tilde since that is
always found in a PPP frame. I have the O'Reilly PPP book if you want
to borrow it. Just let me know when you'll come by.
