Drew,

I think that you often make the mistake of trying to fix your flawed
technical solution instead of explaining what you're trying to achieve.
Explain what you're trying to do from a functional level and we'll
probably be better equipped to help.

\ is an escape character.  \\ will insert a "\" character.  But again, I
don't think that you really want \' in your stored data - it seems
somewhat unlikely that you would, anyhow... and all of your replacing data
to-and-fro is redundant.
