I'd go with Digital Unix if you can find media.  It's a nice BSD based 
OS and works great on those old alpha boxes.  We used them extensively 
at Mindspring when I was there.  A little birdy named nmap tells me they 
still do use some of those boxes, so you know they're workhorses.
