Sorry to be so late getting to this.

I can create a new OO text document, make a selection, open a
new OO document and paste without trouble.

Selection for the test contained three different type faces in
two sizes.

Are you using gnome or KDE as a windows manager?
I use KDE. Any type selected is automatically copied to the
clipboard (at least in my setup) and a simple mouse click will
paste the clipboard contents wherever the cursor is.

But I also tried making a selection, hitting <Ctrl+c>, and
pasting with <Ctrl+v> and that works as well.  What doesn't
work is selecting and then trying to paste by using <Ctrl+v>
if you _haven't_ first used <Ctrl+c>.
