I am trying to compile xchat on Debian (Woody) and am getting the following error:

 -lcrypt -ldl /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so -Wl,--export-dynamic -Wl,-soname -Wl,perl.so -o .libs/perl.so
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lperl
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[3]: *** [perl.la] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/izzie/xchat-2.0.1/plugins/perl'
make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/izzie/xchat-2.0.1/plugins'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/izzie/xchat-2.0.1'
make: *** [all] Error 2

What lib or whatever am i missing?

PS: apt-get install xchat doesn't work either, it gives me:

mystic:/home/izzie/xchat-2.0.1# apt-get install xchat

requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
xchat: Depends: xchat-common (= 1.8.9-0woody2) but 1.8.9-1.ximian.1 is to be installed
E: Sorry, broken packages

I do have xchat-common installed
