[ale] Howard Schmidt to appear at GATech

I noticed that Howard Schmidt is going to be giving a talk in Atlanta, 
today.  In case you aren't aware, he was appointed by Bush as a Special 
Assistant to the President and the Vice Chair of the President's 
Critical Infrastructure Protection Board in December 2001.  So is a key 
player in determining the governments security policy.  Previously, 
hewas Chief Security Officer for Microsoft Corp. so that may give you 
some idea of his qualifications and also his opinions about Open 
Source.

I would love to hear him answer some questions on whether he favors Open 
Source in his policies.

I also note that there will be a talk on ucLinux tomorrow.

HOWARD SCHMIDT TO DELIVER NEXT GTISC LECTURE ON NOV. 5
Howard Schmidt, a nationally renowned leader and advisor in information 
security, will keynote the next GTISC Distinguished Lecture on Nov. 5. 
 Schmidt is Vice Chair of the President's Critical Infrastructure 
Protection Board.  He will speak from 3 to 4 p.m. in the GCATT 
Auditorium on "A National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace." 
Howard A. Schmidt was appointed by President George W. Bush as a Special 
Assistant to the President and the Vice Chair of the President's 
Critical Infrastructure Protection Board in December 2001.  The Cyber 
Security board supports Dr. Condoleezza Rice, National Security 
Advisor, and Gov. Tom Ridge, Director of Homeland Security.  The Cyber 
Security Board focuses on building a specialized group of senior 
government and private sector leaders to focus on cyber security issues 
and coordination of security related incidents. 
Previously, Howard was Chief Security Officer for Microsoft Corp., 
overseeing the Security Strategies Group, which was responsible for 
ensuring the development of a trusted computing environment via 
auditing, policy, best practices and incubation of security products 
and practices.

GCATT is located at 250 14th St. NW in Midtown. Visitor parking is 
available in the parking deck behind the buildings.  Shuttle service 
will be provided at 2:15 in front of the CoC Building and will run

His abstract follows.

Abstract:  "A National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace"
President Bush directed the development of a National Strategy to Secure
Cyberspace to ensure that America has a clear roadmap to protect a part 
of its
infrastructure so essential to our way of life. The draft of that road 
map was
developed in close collaboration with key sectors of the economy that 
rely on
cyberspace, State, and local governments, colleges and universities, and
concerned organizations.

Sector groups developed their own strategies to protect the parts of 
cyberspace
on which they rely.  Town hall meetings were held around the country, 
and
fifty-three clusters of key questions were published to spark public 
debate.
This unique partnership and process is necessary because the majority of 
the
country's cyber resources are controlled by entities outside of 
government. For the Strategy to work, it must be a plan to which a 
broad cross-section of the country is committed. Technology will 
continue to change rapidly, and new vulnerabilities and threats will be 
uncovered. Elements of our present programs may be determined to be 
ineffective in the future. America's cybersecurity strategy must be 
dynamic and continually refreshed to adapt to the changing environment. 
 For the foreseeable future, two things will be true: America will rely 
upon cyberspace and the Federal government will seek a continuing broad 
partnership to develop, implement and refine a National Strategy to 
Secure Cyberspace.


CoC COLLOQUIUM TO FEATURE MEMBER OF SIEMENS CORPORATE RESEARCH

Nassir Navab, a distinguished member of Siemens Corporate Research in 
Princeton, N.J., will deliver a CoC Colloquium on Nov. 7 from 11 to 
noon in CCB 102.  He will speak on "Calibration and 3D reconstruction 
Methods for Medical and Industrial-AR Applications."  The title 
Distinguished Member is the highest scientific rank at Siemens.  His 
abstract and bio follow.

Abstract:
Navab will talk about different mathematical tools Seimens has developed 
for dynamic calibration and 3D reconstruction. He will discuss these 
methods in the context of two main applications. The first one is the 
3D interventional imaging. This application is mainly concerned with 
the dynamic calibration of stationary and mobile C-arms for 
intra-operative 3D tomographic reconstruction and Image Guided Surgery. 
Nassir will not only talk about what Seimens has done in the past, but 
also about the exciting challenges ahead. The second application is the 
industrial as-built reconstruction for augmented reality visualization. 
Navab will briefly show some results in this area and discuss details 
about different calibration and reconstruction methods used for this 
task, highlighting possible extensions for the future. Navab will 
conclude with the discussion of some future directions in 
Interventional Imaging and Augmented Reality.

Bio:
Nassir Navab is a distinguished member at Siemens Corporate research. He 
received his PhD from INRIA and University of Paris Orsay in January 
1993. He was then awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT Media 
Laboratory. He joined SCR in November 1994. He has published over 
seventy scientific papers and is the author of over twenty U.S. and 
international patents. In 2001, he won the Siemens Inventor of the Year 
Award for his contributions to the field of Interventional Imaging. 
Nassir has been active in medical imaging, computer vision and 
augmented reality communities. He was a program committee member for 
MICCAI'02 (www.miccai.org) and ECCV'02 (www.itu.dk/events/eccv02/). He 
is also a member of both steering  and program committees for the IEEE 
International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality 
(www.ismar2002.org). Nassir is a guest editor for IJCV
special issue on Siemens Corporate Research to appear in June 2004.
