If you are using an rpm based distribution, you can run "rpm -qa" to get
a list of all rpm packages installed on the system. That won't list
anything you installed from source or non-rpm binaries or using any
other installers (such as java or shell based installs). If it is a
system you are starting yourself, it is best to try to keep an organized
system and keep track of what you put on there. If it is a system that
you are introduced to later on, your best bet will be to look in
directories like /usr/local and /opt as those are places often used for
other installs.
