Yes, as a Russian culture fanatic, I have long had a book of 
Prokudin-Gorskii's pictures. It's strange to look at a full color picture of 
Leo Tolstoy, who died in 1905. The physicist Maxwell also demonstrated a 
color photo process in his time. But the most amazing technical story is the 
one about the creation of the first commercial color film, Kodachrome. The 
real, pioneering work was done by two musicians, Mannes and Godowsky, who 
dabbled in chemistry in their spare time. They started the work in spare 
closets. Only later did the big companies find out that these guys were 
leagues ahead of them. Eventually, Eastman-Kodak brought them in house.
