No, I am using mozilla-0.9.8-10mdk that came with the distro.

Yes, I tried several applets on various sites.  I also tried three
different plugins: the one from Netscape and the ones from JDKs 1.3.1
and 1.4.  (The Netscape one is actually the JDK 1.3.1 plugin
repackaged.)
