If you're talking about the java2 plugin, when I downloaded the plugin
from the Netscape web site it installed itself in
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/java2/ then in the
/usr/local/mozilla099/mozilla/plugins directory I made a symlink to this
directory and called it java2. In fact most of the plugins install
themselves in the /usr/lib/netscape/plugins directory anyway. So, every
time I download a new mozilla release I install it in a new
/usr/local/mozillaxxx directory and copy the symlinks from the previous
mozilla. (i.e., cp -l)

Here's a listing of my /usr/local/mozilla099/mozilla/plugins/

java2 -> /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/java2/
libflashplayer.so -> /usr/lib/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so*
libjavaplugin_oji.so ->
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/java2/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so*
libnullplugin.so*
raclass.zip -> /usr/lib/RealPlayer8/raclass.zip
rpnp.so -> /usr/lib/RealPlayer8/rpnp.so*
ShockwaveFlash.class -> /usr/lib/netscape/plugins/ShockwaveFlash.class*
