[ale] monitor signal error

If you have a rescue disk, you can edit /etc/inittab. Look for hte line
that says:

id:5:initdefault:

and change the 5 to a 3. This will boot you into multi-user mode with a
command prompt. I always leave this as my default. I hate it when X does
the kinds of things it's doing to you.
