[ale] Simplex vs. Duplex

How do I force my NIC card to come up in Simplex mode?

I recently installed a D-Link switch to replace the old 3com hub and 
everything was working just fine until we had a power outage and I had 
to shut down my Linux firewall before the UPS batery ran down. When it 
came back up the interface was in full duplex mode and now I'm having 
problems with collisions, lost packets and long TCP timeouts.

I looked at the man page for ifconfig and didn't see anything obvious. 
Is there a parameter in the ifcfg-eth1 file I could set?
