I've never used the kernel-mode PPPoE with the Roaring Pengiun client,
but I have used it with a patched copy of pppd.  Works quite well, I
might add.  :)

You either need to have a development snapshot of pppd2.4.2, or apply a
patch to pppd2.4.1, plus the kernel module of course. 

Here's the one I'm using:

ftp://ftp.shaftnet.org/pub/rpms/redhat-7.x/i386/ppp-2.4.1-4pppoe.i386.rpm
or if you prefer,
ftp://ftp.shaftnet.org/pub/rpms/redhat-7.x/SRPMS/ppp-2.4.1-4pppoe.src.rpm
if you want to see the patches that are involved.
