Dear ALE,
I appologize for the flame. If nothing else, I should have marked it "OT"
like the following message submitted by a veteran poster. I too have never
seen anything close to a personal flame on this list - (barring Charles
Marcus reply, my reply and James P. Kenney's .02 cents).

I am not only a newbie to Linux, but also this list, and I will give due
respect to the people who have been here much longer. Hopefully this thread will not turn into some civil religious
flame war where veterans flame newbies and vice versa. I have enough Linux
problems (that I am getting around to dealing with) than to have the time to
continue this thread which is now clearly OT. Please accept my appologies.

Drew,

I was offended by your tirade. It was a personal matter that should have
been handled off list.

This is an open list. It is read by many people who are not active
participants. Some may be in the position to employ you in the future.
While Charles may have put his foot in his mouth by publicly questioning
your prior-posting effort, you just flamed someone on a mailing list
that has a long reputation of being more mature than that.

In the 4+ years I have been on the ale list, I have seen many of the
same people answering questions, providing links to further
documentation, and cajoling others for their choice in editors. The
cajoling has always been light-hearted and all in jest. I can't recall a
flame from anyone. Ever.

Had you responded to the "read the docs" jab with something more in line
with "yes, they have examples for KDE, not gnome. Here is what I
tried...", I might have also jumped in to assist. I don't know the
answer off the top of my head, but I know how to find out stuff like
that and I have done some tinkering on gdm startup. Instead, I wrote you
this.

Please read your .signature file before you go on another flame path.
