The problem with this is that RedHat has reasons for providing a
patched kernel.  For instance, then put ext3 in their kernel before it
got into the standard kernel.  If you compile from the standard tree
you might end up with a less functional kernel.

I think if you start with the "ac" kernel you will be closer to a
RedHat kernel.

I say this, but I've always done what Jim suggests, too.
