Free, I'd start with http://www.linuxdoc.org/

Books, I'd start with:

Running Linux - by Matt Welsh/Lar Kaufman (O'Reilly)
Linux Network Administrator's Guide - Olaf Kirsh/Terry Dawson (O'Reilly)

That's a good start I think. Also, virtually all the dists have their
own web sites which are chock full of info.

Beyond that, I've really found the following quite useful (although
their all primarily security/firewalls kind of books). I'd purchase
them in the order listed, until you run out of money:

Real World Linux Security - Bob Toxen (local guy who's done real good
job covering just about everything) (Prentice-Hall)

Linux Firewalls, there's the original one that covers ipchains and the
Second edition that covers iptables - Robert Ziegler (New Riders)

Building Internet Firewalls (Covers Linux/other Unix/Windows NT)
Zwicky/Cooper/Chapman (O'Reilly)

Firewalls and Internet Security - Cheswick/Bellovin (although it's now a
bit dated, a good read. Probably more enjoyable then useful, although
useful just the same). Addison-Wesley

Maximum Linux Security (Anonymous) Sams
