Really??? I am maintaining 30+ Compaq Proliants ranging from DL 360s to
Proliant 8500s and I can only recall a single power supply failure in the
last 2 years!
Whever possible I use redundant suppies but (knock on wood) I have never
needed them. I can not speak on Dell, their service and reliability may be
exemplary. I have had excellent success with Compaq and HIGHLY recommend
them. At the same time I leave little chance for failure running redundant
power supplies, fans, and ram whenever possible, utilize 0+1 RAID arrays
and even keep 3-4 backup servers around in case of major failure. I just
move the drive arrays over rename server and reboot. I am back online in 15
minutes or less. My directors expect 99.9% uptime. Also my maintenace
agreement specifies response times as well and I have never had a service
call that exceeded the time specified in the contract. If I did I would
expect re-imbursment or I would look for another rep!

To add a disclaimer to this: We no longer purchase ANY Compaq servers as
the failure rate of power supplies is running in the 50-60% range for the
DL-XXX rackmount systems we have purchased over the last
year. Additionally, we pay extra for 4-hour service in our customer
sites. The closest we have gotten so far is 24 hour.

We are only installing Dell systems now.

MHO....YMMV....
