[ale] Bad Superblock on /hdd?

ALE,
Has anyone else had problems with RedHat 7.1/7.2 with a /dev/hdd?
It seems like sometimes when I shutdown/reboot/restart the box, the drive is
not unmounted properly. I can pull the power cord out of the back of the
machine, and /hda will be checked and "cleaned" but I have never seen that
happen with /hdd.

The error message that I get is basically tells me that if my format is e2
and the drive is valid, then I have a bad superblock. Trying out their
suggested command e2fsck -whatever /dev/hdd gives the same message.

This problem occurs on both of my machines - when I used to keep the /hdd in
DOS format, it was much easier to recover. Thinking that the latest and
greatest Linux format would prevent these types of problems, I reinstalled
the entire machine, and let RedHat reformat the drive as a Linux native.
Mistake.

I would really love to know how to solve this problem. Right now (because I
am not a Linux guru) my quickest solution seems to be a reinstall with a
spare drive - just to get the machine to finish booting up. Maybe going back
to DOS format so that I can just type fsck /hdd.

I have discussed this with a competent Linux hacker - his response amounted
to "that's weird, I don't know."
