[ale] X weirdness (was RE: [ale] X looks pixelated (xfs *is* running))

Looks like this was the case.  There's an option you
can set for the CHIPS driver called "NoStretch". 
Without it, X will stretch a 640x480 display as if it
were a 800x600...making it pretty ugly.

After doing this, my display looks much better, but
still restricted to a measly 640x480.

Assuming this is caused by the refresh rate
settings...how can I determine what refresh rates will
work at 800x600?  Xconfigurator isn't really helping
at all...
