[ale] I can get my modem to work in linux and this is my first linux i have used

Where did you check?

According to -
  AOpen's site & product info, this modem is indeed a winmodem.

  Research at http://www.linmodems.org & related links,
  there is no driver-support outside Windows for this modem.
