[ale] Changing DM in Redhat 7.2 - aaargh!!

I assumed you were running X automatically from
runlevel 5. 

You need to kill gdm first....the X line in inittab is
specified to respawn, so it might reevaluate the
prefdm file when you kill gdm.  However, I can't
guarantee it.  You could telinit 3 to switch to
runlevel 3 (or 4) and then telinit 5 back to 5.  This
should do it (if not, I guess you can reboot).   

Is this not how you're running X?  If you get a text
login when you boot up the machine and you have to
"startx" to get X running, then we've been going down
the wrong path entirely....
