[ale] Paging from Linux (~tangent)

I've always just piped sendmail to myNAM at somecarrier.com but I can see where in
this world of increasing security concerns that one wouldn't want to send
hostnames, gateways, etc. over SMTP.

a more interesting ? would be whether any of the big wireless carriers support
encrypted transport (PGP or maybe scp to mymobile at pager.carrier.com?) at least
as far as the MTSO since I believe all the various digital standards (re:
non-AMPS) are encrypted between the device (phone/pager) & cell.

is there any reason other than security (albeit a very valid one) not to just
use SMTP?
