for me, efnet is the best-- it's the internet's playground. they don't
have all the bs like channel 'ownership' and nick monopolies. efnet has
any type of channel you could want... if you're looking for a big network,
efnet is the best. www.efnet.org.

i run a small irc net called xodarap [irc.xodarap.net] and we have some
technical people, but we are very small. feel free to come check it out..
we *do* use the bs services [which i absolutely hate, but users on small
networks seem to demand them].

as far as the directories and file locations, it's all a matter of
preference for the most part. on my own system, i like to keep my home
directory relatively clean.. i download to it, but move things to where
they need to go soon after. when i install new packages, it's always in
/usr/local/src/package and my own system scripts and binaries always go in
/usr/local/bin. after installation, i leave all the sources in
/usr/local/src in case i ever need to look back at the source or
documentation and i delete the archives. this works well for me, but it
really is just a matter of organization and you should do whatever makes
the most sense to you.

peace,
synco g.
