It sure can. Most corporations require you to fill out an
application with salary info. If they decide to ping one
of your past employers, they can request salary info. I believe
falsifying resumes is grounds for termination. Look at the
guy from Veritas who said he went to Stanford. 

I always find it best to be honest, sell yourself, and show 
what you can do to help the company. If you sell yourself 
and ask for a fair wage, they are usually inclined to work 
with you.
