[ale] Gentoo Linux install question

I did untar the goods in the /usr/portage directory.  I assume now that 
'emerge rsync' just gets the goods.  I was working from chapter 10,  I 
skipped 10 actually as I did the wget and unpacked the goods by hand.  I 
then attempted  the 'cd /usr/portage; scripts/bootstrap.sh'  and this 
failed to complete with a broken pipe.  My point was, did I need to 
install the goods I downloaded via 'emerge system' before I did the 
bootstrap.sh script?  I may have hosed up my system as I've attempted to 
run 'emerge system' a couple of times, but it continues to fail at the 
same point.

Suggestions as to which is the chicken and which is the egg would be 
appreciated.  (scripts/bootstrap.sh or emerge system) which comes first??

I didn't have to buy my radio from a specific company to listen
to FM, why doesn't that apply to the Internet (anymore...)?
