James,

I don't know anything about this, but it made me think of a discussion I saw
on the Tomcat user list about a month ago. Maybe it's nothing related, but
maybe I'll pass it along just in case it might help.

Subject: [ale] Error message on ssl use:

[Sun Aug 4 13:27:11 2002] [error] mod_ssl: SSL handshake failed (server
server.domain.com:443, client client.domain.com) (OpenSSL library error
follows)
[Sun Aug 4 13:27:11 2002] [error] OpenSSL:
error:1408F071:lib(20):func(143):reason(113)

It works accessing from a (gag, spit) win98 box IE5, used to work from
my RH7.3 Galeon 1.1/Mozilla. Now the connection attempt IMMEDIATELY
spits up an error message: Incorrect message authentication code error.

I just upgraded openssl on the server. do I need to restart my browser?
I cleared all cache, reloaded pages, etc? I googled this and found
nothing.
