[ale] compiling mutt?

I just compiled the latest mutt (1.3.22i) it compiled clean, installed 
clean (except a missing README.UPGRADE file).  When I run it though
it complains it timed out waiting on fnctl lock.  I remember having to
work around this the last time I compliled mutt but don't remember the
fix and can't find it in my archives.

This is a 2.4.9 kernel, debian sid box.

Thoughts?
