Keep in mind that slashdot (and most linux mailing lists, etc.)
is not a representative sample of the linux community, but a
small vocal minority. Most of the community is not as radical,
nor as irrational, as what is portrayed by places like slashdot.
People are generally writing code, working on open-source
projects, using the best tools available to them (be it Windows
or Linux), and getting on with their life without getting
religious about it. Most certainly do not have the time, or
the inclination, to read and post things to slashdot. I read it
occasionally (not as often as I used to) but rarely go past the
main page, and never post anything to the forums. I participate
in local linux users groups, where the main focus is on
cooperation and helping other people out, not bashing the latest
technology that does not fit in with out particular world-view.

The linux community is a very wide-encompassing beast, and
does include quite a few people who tend to state their opinions
more willingly than the most of the general public. We tend to
be outspoken, smart, and wary of the outside world which tends
to get things wrong when it comes to our area of expertise,
technology. If you want a better representation of the "linux
community", check out local users' groups (like ALE!) not only
on the mailing list, but in person at the meetings.
