I don't know if this is exactly what you are looking for, but 
I've written a simple perl script that basically connects 
to an SMTP server and sends out email. It allows you to use 
custom headers, runs on any machine with Perl installed, 
and even handles simple attachments. I've cleaned it up a 
bit and put it on the web:
